Steps to Respect

Themes Taught in Steps to Respect

 

Joining a Group

  1. Stand nearby, look, and listen.

  2. Say something positive or ask questions.

  3. Ask to play or join.

  4. Say something helpful or find a way to help.

  5. Ask again to play or join

 

Assertiveness Steps

  1. Get Calm – Take three deep breaths. Between each breath, say two or three short words that remind you to get calm.

  2. Stand straight and tall.

  3. Look at the person you are speaking to.

  4. Say what you mean in a strong, clear, respectful voice.

     

Three R’s of Bullying

  1. Recognize

  2. Refuse

  3. Report

 

Recognizing Bullying

  • Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose.

 

Reporting Isn’t Tattling

  • Reporting is telling an adult to keep someone safe

  • Tattling is telling an adult to get someone in trouble

  • Anytime is a good time to report bullying

 

Bystander Power

  • Be a part of the bullying solution and help stop bullying

  • Report bullying to an adult.

  • Refuse to let others be bullied.

  • Don’t watch bullying.

 

Working It Out

  1. Respectfully ask, “What is wrong?”

  2. Listen carefully and think about your friend’s point of view

  3. Figure out what to do to make it better

  4. Ask yourself, “Is it working?” If it is not working, try something else
